Today was one of those days that makes you question your life choices — just for a moment. I went out for a long ride, moving a small herd of horses from one place to another. It was cold, it was windy, and I was riding Channie — a very high-energy P.R.E. Spanish horse with plenty of spark. When we arrived at the field, the chaos hit me. The gate was surrounded by thick mud, and the horses were full of energy, squabbling and jostling. Loose horses were darting in different directions, galloping and bolting. For a brief second, I honestly wondered what I'd gotten myself into. But when you're committed, you're committed. So I took a breath and reminded myself of the most important thing: trust. I trusted myself — I’ve been here before. And I trusted Channie — we’ve been through a lot together. He wasn’t always this strong, healthy horse. When I first met him, he was a rescue — starved, anxious, and unsure of himself. We've done a lot of work together since then, and while he's still high-energy and often on edge, we’ve built something solid. That trust carried us through. We set off, my friend and Channie's rescuer, riding behind me on her other horse, and our lead rider guiding the way. Channie was buzzing — he was so excited that getting him to walk felt impossible. He trotted, he cantered, and trotted some more. The energy was contagious, the wind whipping around us, and I could feel him wanting to break loose with the others. Yet somehow, we stayed together. And despite the mud, the chaos, and the wild energy, there was something beautiful about it all. That ride cleared the cobwebs — you know that feeling? The one where you realize you’ve been carrying a bit too much tension without even noticing? I found myself just feeling grateful — grateful for where we live, how we live, and who we share it with. These weren’t even my horses; I was just there to help move them. But it felt like a privilege — to be part of their world for a little while, to trust a horse like Channie, and to know he trusted me back. It wasn’t perfect — but honestly, it was pretty special.
